Day 7: Chicago part 2

"World Famous Breakfast"
The tower formerly known as Sears
Today we woke up a little bit late after a long first day and night in Chi-Town, but we quickly got our bearings and headed to Lou Mitchell’s famous Chicago diner for breakfast as per the recommendation of our hosts.  We had an excellent meal served with donut holes and “the world’s best coffee,” which was actually very good coffee.
We then decided to walk around the city, and after walking past Union Station and thinking about the Untouchables for a minute we found ourselves at the Willis (Sears) Tower, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

On an impulse we decided to get a birds-eye view of the city and go up to the observation deck, where the views were absolutely amazing. We also went out onto these little glass observation boxes on the 103rd floor that actually extend beyond the edge of the building and allow you to look straight down to the ground, which was definitely unnerving.

After taking the elevator 105 floors down from the top, we walked all the way east to Grant Park and just walked around for a while.  Here we saw the Buckingham Fountain, a miniature model of the entire city, a pretty cool garden area in the middle of the park, a very cool looking concert venue, and a modern art piece known only as “The Bean.” When we were done checking out the park we made our way back to the apartment and got ready to go to Wrigley Field to watch the Cubs play.

We rode the EL to Wrigleyville, stopping into the well-known Slugger’s Sports Bar (which is owned by some of Jonathan’s high school buddies) before heading into the game. The game was excellent: we saw the Wrigley Brass Band, the Wrigley Rooftop seats, we tried ‘Old Style’ the official Cubs beer, and most importantly we saw the Cubs win a game—which we hear doesn’t happen too often!  The night at Wrigley was awesome, and when the game was over we headed right back to the apartment to get some sleep before our last day in Chicago.

Thanks again to our hosts, Jonathan and Meredith, for showing us another awesome night in their town.
